In this online course you’ll start with an introduction into intercultural topics,
review necessary conversation management devices on B1/B2 level and then embark on a journey of self-guided discussions in small groups of 2 (tandem) or 3 (tridem) students from different countries and cultural backgrounds. You’ll be provided with suggested talking points for discussion for each meeting as well as multimedia and other resources. At the end of the course, you’ll work in small groups to present aspects of your cultures and universities. Course materials will be provided except for independent research which is an integral part of the course.

By the end of the course you will:
• Learn about topics of and engage in intercultural discourse
• Build and consolidate core B1/B2 vocabulary to discuss intercultural topics
• Learn about Tübingen, the university and German culture

The course will take place online via Zoom and the Moodle Learning Platform. All course materials will be developed and distributed by your
instructor.

Think Globally: International Tridems on Global Issues [GER C1]

Course Dates: Wednesdays between 27.04.-06.07.2022 always from 5-7:15pm CET (CET= Central European Time, i.e. German time), tridem dates to be determined between these dates.

This project is designed as a hands-on intercultural English course that brings together students from multiple countries to exchange ideas in virtual teams on issues of global importance. While practicing academic and intercultural communication skills, the teams of three or four will discuss topics such as:
- Diversity
- Sustainability
- Public Health
- Equal Opportunity (such as Racism and Poverty)
- Freedom of Speech (such as in Social Media)

Presentations and research for roles in two panel discussions will be prepared independently and with teams prior to meetings in Zoom. Also prior to presentations you will do reading and/or listening to prepare for an informed discussion. In addition, we will reflect on effective communication in an international academic environment. Developing such global skills is a prerequisite for tackling urgent global concerns.

We all know that one of the best ways to learn English is to spend time in an English-speaking country, which is why by attending this course, participants will simulate going on a trip abroad to Brighton in England in order to visit one of its many International English Schools.  The course is designed to have students “learn by doing” by putting students through typical situations one may face when abroad in order to reinforce grammatical foundations as well as refresh and expand on basic vocabulary.

In 2015, the United Nations set 17 sustainable development Goals (SDGs), to be met by 2030, covering areas such as poverty, hunger and food security, good health, education, justice and gender equality, alongside various environmental issues, including energy, economic growth, climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable consumption and production.

In this course, we will learn about these and related topics of global importance, listen to video and audio podcasts, read articles and visit relevant websites. To improve our active language skills, we will work on appropriate vocabulary and structures, and then present and discuss these topics both orally and in writing.

This new course will enable you to practise and improve your academic English in a university context. This will include:

•    participating in small-group discussions on academic topics and podcasts;
•    giving presentations;
•    socialising at conferences and other international events;
•    researching and assessing suitable PhD programmes at universities in English-speaking countries;
•    producing and improving academic written work (including citation systems);
•    improving academic syntax, structures and collocations;
•    using academic learner’s dictionaries and other aids (such as corpora).

The precise content of the course will depend on the needs and subject areas of the participants.

The course will cover all four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

The course is open to PhD students, both matriculated and employed, with a language level of B2, C1 or C2.

This course, to be taught at a B2.2+/C1/C2 level, will focus on the following subject-specific areas:

• Mastering the vocabulary required to describe common medical procedures and medical conditions
• Discussing medical issues and related scientific topics
• Roleplaying simple medical scenarios
• Listening to and presenting podcasts about medicine and health: this will form the main oral assessment in the course
• Reading texts on medical and health-related topics, including the UK’s National Health Service
• Exploring the NHS, hospitals, medical degrees etc. in the UK (and elsewhere) through their websites
• Writing a variety of relevant short texts
• Practising pronunciation, grammar and general vocabulary as required

There will also be a final exam in the last week of the semester, including listening, reading and writing tasks.

This course is open to all students and employees of the university who have scored at least 75 points in our entry test. It is however particularly suitable for students of medicine and related disciplines in pre-clinical semesters.

The course can also be counted as a Wahlpflichtfach for the Vorklinik.

This three-lesson workshop offers an interactive format to gain insight into an historic and current topic while practicing everyday English. The course is enriched with multimedia, personal stories, a debate and literary recommendations.

It is ideal for students at the B2+ level who want to have more practice speaking, or who are simply interested in the topic of social justice or US culture. However, anyone at or above that level is welcome to join the workshop, even if you have never taken a FSZ course.

We will cover:
• What is and isn’t ‘racism’?
• An overview of US history: from colonial times, over the founding fathers, Civil War and Jim Crow laws, to the Civil Rights movement
• Institutional discrimination against minorities: economic, educational and health issues
• ‘Law and Order’ policies and incarceration of minorities
• Black Lives Matter movement’s call for ‘defunding the police’
• Why does it matter who is in the White House

Intercultural Communication is designed to introduce students to various intercultural aspects which they may be confronted with while studying abroad, or while working in an international company, be it in the home country, or abroad.

The course will take both a theoretical and practical approach and amongst others will look at the following topics:

- Dimensions of cultures

- Stereotyping - German core values

- Verbal and non-verbal communication

- The works of Hofstede,Hall & Trompenaars

- Working in an international team

This course focuses on all four language skills, and is the counterpart to both the Scientific English and Academic Skills courses. The courses may be taken in either order.

This course covers two main areas: preparing a poster presentation on one or more academic journal articles (or the student’s own research) for a fictional international conference; preparing and writing an academic paper and another piece of extended essay writing.

The preparation and practice for the academic paper will include:

  • Developing academic vocabulary and style
  • Structuring and organizing academic texts
  • Incorporating references and citations into texts

Listening tasks will include university lectures or seminars, scientific and academic TV and radio programmes, and ‘Youtube’ videos or ‘Ted-talks’ by well-known scientists and academics.

This course focuses on all four language skills, and complements the English for Academic Purposes course offered in the winter semester. These two courses may be taken in either order.
The course is heavily based on active discussion and interaction, particularly in small groups.
Emphasis will be placed on presentation skills and student-led discussions, based on written and audio/video sources. All students will give an academic presentation/seminar, based on their field of study or another academic area of interest.
Listening tasks will include university lectures or seminars, scientific and academic TV and radio programmes, and ‘Youtube’ videos or ‘Ted-talks’ by well-known scientists and academics.
This course will also practice academic applications (including CVs) and interviews, and participants will be able to increase their knowledge of the university system in at least one English-speaking country.

This course offers an overview of American culture while providing a foundation for further studies. We will take an interdisciplinary approach by first exploring and analyzing how culture influences society and how individuals interact with culture. We will examine the many facets of American lifestyle by looking at US cultural diversity and exploring American values such as religion and personal freedoms. We will also consider the global role and image of the US, including mass media, politics, and America’s role in international conflict. This course will combine themes from current events, popular culture, and historically important contexts in an attempt to answer the question: What is American culture?
